Learn safe snow removal practices for construction sites this winter. Watch our toolbox talk video and download the full Winter Toolbox Package.
Use these toolbox topics during the winter at your next safety meeting to help workers stay ahead and recognize the hazards associated with winter.
Each topic includes a clear description you can read aloud during your next safety meeting.
Review safe snow removal techniques using proper PPE, snow blowers, shovels, and slip-resistant footwear. Emphasize body mechanics and safe equipment use.
Identify early signs like shivering, numbness, confusion, and poor coordination. Prevent with warm layers, heated break areas, job rotation, and warm fluids.
Fatigue increases accident risk. Remind crews to adjust sleep schedules and be extra cautious during darker morning start times.
Encourage vaccinations, staying home when sick, covering coughs/sneezes, and proper handwashing to reduce illness spread on site.
Discuss frostbite/hypothermia risks. Reinforce proper layering, moisture management, and rotating workers into warm areas.
Teach workers to recognize white/gray skin, numbness, and burning sensations. Stress immediate warming and avoiding rubbing frostbitten areas.
Cold temps damage materials like concrete, adhesives, and sealants. Explain curing/heating requirements and how to protect materials from frost damage.
Cover symptoms such as slurred speech, confusion, stumbling, or clumsiness. Stress staying dry, avoiding wind exposure, and warming protocols.
Discuss emergency preparedness: securing materials, monitoring power/communications, avoiding downed lines, and delaying work when conditions are unsafe.
Before storms hit, clear walkways, stage shovels/salt/sand, inspect equipment, and plan for snow load hazards on roofs and scaffolds.
Winter UV still burns. Promote sunscreen, sunglasses, and awareness when working around reflective snow and ice.
Review blind spots, reduced visibility, road hazards, and safe operating distances. Inspect equipment before use.
Encourage layering, windproof outerwear, insulated gloves/boots, and frequent warm-up breaks. Rotate tasks when temperatures drop. If you're looking for expert guidance, consider booking a free safety assessment to get a personalized action plan.
Normalize staying home when genuinely ill. This prevents spread on site and reduces productivity loss from workers trying to “push through.”
Explain windchill effects and the increased risk of frostbite. Adjust work/rest schedules based on Environment Canada windchill charts.
Discuss vehicle inspections, proper tire selection, braking distances, and reducing speed. Remind workers to clear snow/ice from mirrors, roofs, and lights.
Keep walkways, stairs, and access paths clear of snow/ice. Add signage and barriers when conditions require extra caution.
Address slip/fall prevention with proper footwear, traction aids, salt/sand use, reporting icy spots, and slowing down movement.
Tip: Don’t cover all 18 topics at once.
Deliver one short, focused topic per day or per week.
This ensures:
Better retention
Stronger safety culture
Improved awareness
Reduced incidents during the winter season
Small, frequent conversations lead to big improvements in jobsite safety.
