Personal Safety Involvement, Changing Worker Behaviour!

Personal Safety Involvement, Changing Worker Behaviour!

How do you coach your workers to do the right thing?

Do you find it difficult to get workers to stop committing unsafe acts?

Do you feel like no matter how often you tell them not to do something, as soon as your back is turned, they just do it anyway?

If you answered yes to any of these you are not alone.

When we ask Safety Professionals what is their biggest fear, they almost always come back with: "I am afraid I will miss something and one of my workers will get hurt".

This is a huge responsibility to take on.

One person or a safety team can not be everywhere at once, watching everything. Even if they could, how would they ever get enough experience to recognize every situation that could go wrong?

Safety Professionals need tools that help them empower their company's workforce.

Workers that understand their job know the right way to do it but sometimes lack the motivation to make the right decision.

So how can you set them up for success and make a lasting difference in their life?

We want to introduce you to a technique we call the Personal Safety Involvement or PSI.

Personal Safety Involvement is the framework to change your worker's behaviour.

In this video, David Brennan, Cofounder of Safety Evolution teaches the PSI framework and talks about how he used it successfully in his career as a safety professional.

Remember to ask the right questions. Don't be afraid to get to the worker's personal drivers.

  1. Who is important to them?
  2. How would this affect their lives?
  3. What would life be like for those people?
  4. Let them really think about their answers and don't interfere.
  5. Always finish with a commitment from them.
